Front Porch Appeal, Issue #006 - Autumn is upon us! September 11, 2009 |
Hello to all our porch loving friends, We’ve begun the process of transitioning our site to a brand new format and hope you like it. We’ve also added new content since our last update so be sure to check our autumn porch decorating ideas. Autumn is our favorite time of year and we love to spend time on the porch watching the leaves change and temperatures drop.
Autumn / Halloween Porch Decorating Contest
We will be announcing a Porch Decorating Contest for Autumn and Halloween soon. In the meanwhile, visit our porch decorating page for fun outdoor Halloween decorating ideas. Please watchour home page for details about our contest - coming soon! Porch TidbitsDecorating for autumn can be hugely rewarding. The brilliant colors of fall seem to complement any style porch and there are so many ways to create just the look you want.If you have trouble knowing where to begin we suggest you start with a beautiful fall wreath for the front door. Continue decorating around the colors in the wreath. Not sure what wreath would look the best on your door? Use our wreath pictures to give you some ideas. Don’t forget to use a lot of natural materials to complement our decorating scheme. Most can be found in your yard or neighboring woods. A few logs stacked beside a bale of stray and perhaps some dried flowers with different grasses in a pot placed on top will give a corner of your porch the right look. Check out how Rebecca decorates her porch for fall to give you even more great ideas!
Porch Anatomy
Ever get confused about rise and run and how it’s used when building a porch roof? We can help. We explain how a porch roof is constructed and how rise and run are integral to the process. Like porch foundations, porch roofs aren’t usually too complex and it helps to understand the process if you are contemplating building a new roof, 3-season porch, or screen porch. The slope is the steepness of your roof and is the ratio of the rise and run between any two points on your roof. A 7/12 roof (rise and run is normally expressed as a ratio) means that for every 12 inches horizontally (the run), your roof rises 7 inches. We have a great rise and run guide that also explains how to use it. Porch GetawaysLooking for weekend get-a-way this fall? Be sure to visit our site to see the porches of some wonderful Bed and Breakfast (B&B) inns.B&Bs always have beautifully decorated porches so whether you have a porch or not, consider visiting a B&B for pure relaxation and some great porch sitting. You can make your reservations and travel arrangements right from our site- now how easy is that! Porch MaintenanceOne of our neighbors was painting her porch balusters the other day which reminded me that this is an opportune time to make porch repairs. If you are staining your porch I recommend you choose a high quality product like Sikkens. It is more expensive but it’s well worth the cost in the long run. Before you apply any product be sure to thoroughly clean your porch prior to application. Like most things in life, it’s the preparation that matters most! Thoughts from the Porch Steps
I heard an advertisement the other day where the narrator said “Your body is regenerating every day, New cells are being created to replace the old.” So it is with each new day for all of us.
See you next time!May you take a few moments and put your feet up on your porch swing. Try your hand at making roses from maple leaves. Really! Isn't this a creative idea?
We hope you are enjoying the beginning of the autumn season where you live. Take a little time each day to enjoy your porch! We love hearing from you. See you in October! Our warm regards to you and yours,
