Applying Screening Material
On The Interior

by Mike Benjamin
(Prosperity, SC)

QUESTION: Are there any reasons not to apply screen material to the interior of a screen porch instead of the outside? I have an upper deck that needs to be re-screened and it would be much easier to remove the old screen and apply new screen material to the interior.

ANSWER: There's really no reason you can't apply screening material to the interior. You will probably get more accumulation of dirt/debris against the outside due to the space between the exterior and screen face.

I would probably apply trim around the exterior and flush with the screen for appearances but it isn't necessary.

You may also want to "frame out" the interior so as to look like screen panels but that is optional as well. I'd avoid running screen across the framing because if it is ever torn, etc., you'll have to replace the entire screen. I'd opt for individual screen panels.

Here's something you could consider that is ideal for your situation - screen porch window panels. They will not only provide significant screening but also extend your season by converting it to a three-season porch. They are custom made to fit almost any openings and are easy to install.

Hope this helps,

Dave
