Book Summary of Perfect Porches

A coast-to-coast look at forty American porches

Dave and I are very pleased to provide a book summary for Perfect Porches authored by Paula S. Wallace, a fellow porch lover. This amazing book is a quintessential look at forty American porches across the United States.

This is a must-have book for porch lovers. You will find a bounty of fabulous porch ideas, sentiment and amazing porch designs.

From the Introduction:
"A good porch is a dear and treasured friend. It holds on to family secrets, keeping them safely hidden in nooks and crannies until it's time for them to be revealed.

A porch invites lively celebration, a chance to let loose, to sing, to dance, to be free. It can also encourage reflection and afford the rare opportunity to be still and enjoy a quiet summer breeze.

"The porch is an American icon, offering both a refuge and a view onto the world-as well as a glimpse into the home and the personality of those who live within. "

Sampling of houses featured in the book

  • Oak Bluffs Camp in Martha's Vineyard: Illumination night, a very meaningful community ritual, is celebrated on porches. Celbrated by thousands of people singing hymns. The village of gingerbreads is set aglow by many charming lanterns hanging from the porches.
  • Brown Woods Farm in Bluegrass Country: Campouts attract many to celebrate around the quaint yet modern glass-and-wood porch with its eclectic chairs and lovely scent from the nearby rose garden. The windows that overlook this amazing porch were repurposed from a couple dozen structures.
  • Passumpsic Point in Vermont: A private home with a magnificent view of Lake Fairlee. On each side of the cottage can be found a porch, deck or breezeway. The residents who escape to this retreat enjoy the sailboats gliding by and children enjoying the spacious yards.
