Brooklyn Christmas Lights

Fantastic Front Porch Christmas Decorations

We are really excited to show you these fantastic Brooklyn Christmas lights courtesy of photographer Becca Dorstek.

Christmas front porch decorating doesn't get much better than what the folks do in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn, New York City.

Each year approximately 100,000 people parade past these 'over-the-top' Christmas light displays complete with inflatables, motorized features, and even staged characters like Santa.

Known as the Miracle Mile, these front porches are decorated from 10th to 13th Avenues and from 83rd to 86th Streets in Dyker Heights, Brooklyn.

Although many are constructed by professionals perhaps you can replicate some of their Christmas light ideas on your front porch.

We are very grateful to Becca for sharing photos of her Brooklyn Christmas lights and hope these will inspire you to decorate without abandon!

Not everyone can create such magnificent outdoor Christmas lighting displays like the Brooklyn Christmas lights.

Many of these are actually created by professional lighting experts. But, they definitely can put you in the right holiday spirit even if you can't be there to see them in person.

Mary and I like to get lighting ideas for decorating our own home for the holidays through pictures. It is fun to pick out the little details that make the entire scene come alive.

The home in the porch picture below lends itself to creating a ginger-bread lighting display. Your home may not be conducive to making it into ginger-bread; however, using your outdoor lighting to complement your home makes for really neat outdoor Christmas light decorating ideas!

I read where the Dyker Heights' motto is "Handsomest suburb in greater New York" and is also known as the "undisputed capital of Christmas pageantry". No argument from me!

If you'd like to see these on your next Christmas holiday trip to the Big Apple, we offer the following tips (information subject to change):
  • Decorated neighborhood is between 10th to 13th Avenue and from 83rd to 86th streets in Dyker Heights
  • Subway Information: D/M trains to 18th Ave; R train to 86th Street
  • Visit anytime after Thanksgiving but the viewing is better in mid-December
  • Try for a weekend visit which are typically better than weeknights
  • Arrive between 7 - 9 p.m. for best viewing. Don't get there too late or the lights will be turned off for the night.

Becca Dorstek Photography as seen by others:
