Front Porch Appeal

Here's Wishing You a Healthy
And Prosperous New Year

Issue #73 January 2016
January - the month of setting goals and fresh starts. Mary and I have lots of plans for 2016 among them being de-cluttering, several fun trips, and of course, getting more porch sitting time.

Most importantly, we wish each of you, our porch loving friends, good health and much happiness throughout 2016.

Although it is hard to imagine sitting on your porch in the blustery cold or heavy rains, Mary and I love January. It is actually one of our favorite months. January inspires us to think of the year ahead and how much fun we'll have on our porch.

Many folks will be moving, remodeling, or building in 2016 and we want to remind you to use our site for porch design, construction, and landscaping ideas. We even give you access to hundreds of house plans.

It's not too early to start identifying your needs and desires to create your perfect home and porch.

To inspire you, Mary and I have a few ideas we believe will start those creative juices flowing. Curl up by the fireplace (or on a comfy chair) and enjoy!

Home Plans with Porches

Whether you are looking for a new home plan or just want ideas for remodeling, our house plan section has a myriad of floor plans and wonderful porches too. Here's one example:

The combination of the porch, home layout and color really makes this ranch home so inviting. Adding to that, the walkway, picket fence and landscaping really boost the appeal, too.

Review our section on home plans. Not only is it useful to those contemplating building a home but also to those who are remodeling or who want creative front porch designs and as you can see, landscaping ideas too!

Listen to our podcast with Jarret Magbee, CEO and President of Family Home Plans, who offers insight into purchasing home plans online!

Use Our Porch Illustrator

Our porch illustrator is a great tool for visualizing the effect of different style porches on either a typical two-story or ranch-style home. It is interesting to see how changing a roof line or just adding railings can make such a difference on a home.

Log Home Porches for Your Viewing Pleasure

There's something special about a beautiful log home and porch. Whether its their natural beauty or pleasing front porches it is hard not to take a second look when you see one. Photographer Roger Wade seems to capture the true beauty of log homes and has graciously allowed us to share his photos with you.

Whether you might build or purchase a log home, or just looking for ideas, checking out our log home porch section is sure to please.

Porch Construction Ideas

If planning to build a porch this year, be sure to check out our entire porch building section where we show you what is involved from the ground up! We offer ideas and tips along with information you need to know before you begin.

Looking Ahead to Valentine Month

Whether you relish the idea of Valentine Day or simply want to brighten up your porch for the chilly month of February, we have some ideas to get you going. Last year I used inexpensive tea-towels and red ribbon to create fresh and colorful Valentine pillow covers for our porch.

I used a small piece of denim to add a simple heart to each pillow (optional, of course).

Our readers have shared their porch Valentine decorations with us, too.

An Easy Way to Add Porch Charm

Changing your porch railings is an easy way to add immense charm to almost any home. You have a myriad of options from which to choose, from simple turned spindles to custom designed balustrades. In addition, you can choose your railing material, from wood to aluminum and even vinyl which are almost maintenance-free - no more painting.

These are but two examples:

On the Road

We had the fortunate pleasure to visit Madison Indiana last month and loved it so much it might just become our home in the future. Charles Kuralt called it "The most beautiful river town in America" and we definitely agree.
