Ann's back porch

Ann's back porch

QUESTION: This back porch is narrow (about 8 feet wide)and one end is narrower because of the bay window. How can I best furnish and decorate the porch so that all of the space is usable?
Thanks for your help and ideas.

ANSWER: Thank you for the great question, Ann. And for coming to our website.

Dave and I had a chat about your porch and here are some ideas we came up with for your porch...

- On the narrow end of your porch, create a focal point by hanging an attractive piece of outdoor artwork on the wall. Below that you could put a small set of shelves and fill it with a collection of something you love: crocks, seashells, plants (if you have enough light).

- Then in front of the bay window, create an intimate area for drinking iced tea or a glass of wine. Get a small table and two chairs (a small bistro set). I saw some pretty tables last year at Home Depot that had a lovely mosaic top that would be perfect. You could even hang an outdoor chandelier above your table.

- Where you have your double rocker, get a small outdoor rug for that area to warm it up. You could pick up some of the colors in the artwork (or vice versa). You could also add color with cushions or pillows on your double rocker.

- Then on the other end of your porch, put down a complementary or matching outdoor rug and create another sitting area. You could get an outdoor floor or table lamp for that area, too. And maybe a classy wind chime.

- We hope these ideas give you some inspiration for your porch. We would love to see "before" and "after" pictures, Ann.

Most of all, have fun with it and create a porch that will you will enjoy. Thanks so much.

Plants would be nice!
by: Mary

Hi Ann,
Sure, plants would be nice in front of your bay window. That way you could enjoy them from inside as well as on the porch.

Choose plants depending upon the amount of light you receive on your porch. A beautiful hanging basket(s) is another idea.

Another thought for that area is one of those outdoor water fountains - where you hear the little trinkle of water. That could be very relaxing and when your bay window is open you could enjoy the peaceful sounds from inside, too.

Thanks, Ann!
Mary

Thanks for your ideas!

Thank you for your ideas for my porch. I had already been considering the wall decor as a focal point, but just have not found something that I really love. I am definitely going to continue looking. I don't think I would have enough space for the bistro table outside the bay window, though. (And, I have one just inside the bay window.) So I probably will just have to leave that area empty or, what do you think of my putting a plant (or plants) in that area? Thanks again.
