New Front Porch Design Needed

by Pat E.
(West Deptford NJ)

QUESTION: We have a narrow two story house with just a very small porch design (3ft wide) and it is in terrible shape. We would like to build a new porch and make it larger. (approx 8 ft wide). Where can we get porch plans with a list of building materials?

ANSWER: Hello, Pat! Thanks for stopping by and asking a great question. Dave and I know that you will love having a larger porch to enjoy. We have a couple suggestions for you.

Suggestion 1: We know a landscape architect who can draw 3-D conceptual porch designs. His name is Brian Wray and we have seen his work. We do not earn any commission by referring you to Brian. We just like the service he provides and think it's of value to pass along.

Basically, if you provide Brian with several photographs of your home and give him an idea or picture of what you would like your porch to be, then he can create 3-D conceptual drawings for you. He charges a fee for his work obviously and it would be nice for you to actually visualize a wider porch. Brian also includes conceptual landscape designs in his drawings - and wow, the difference some nice landscaping makes.

He may also be able to provide a layout plan which includes dimensions, materials call-outs, and basic plan details for a do-it-yourselfer, licensed contractor, or home improvement professional to quote and install. It's best to contact Brian directly so he can give you the details. His contact information is on the bottom of our conceptual front porch design page.

Here's an example of Brian's work:

Suggestion 2: Purchase porch plans online. Family Home Plans is one place you may want to look. Here is an example of one of their porch plans.

No matter what, we suggest you drive through neighborhoods or look through magazines to find a porch that you envision on your home. Take pictures of porches you like. That will be a good first step.

I hope these suggestions help you. We always love seeing before and after pictures. No matter what, snap a few pictures because you will love seeing the difference. You can share photos with us right here. Best wishes with your porch design, planning and construction.

I am excited for you to have a larger porch to enjoy. Thanks for writing to us, Pat.

Thanks bunches,
Mary
