QUESTION about Replacing a 1920 Era Porch: I'm getting ready to replace the porch on my house. It is covered but the current boards are bad at the ends and I believe that I have a bad joist in the front of the porch.

My question is two-fold; first, can I install tongue and groove flooring and second, what type of material do you recommend?

The porch sits over an area of my basement. I was thinking of using Mahogany or Massaranduba wood.

ANSWER: Sam, thanks for contacting us. Sure, you can use tongue and groove flooring which is pretty standard flooring for porches. I take it you will be removing the existing flooring and repairing the joists.

Either of your choices will work well and another option you might consider is Ipe. Whatever wood you choose, just make sure it is treated properly to prolong the life of the porch floor.

If looking for something that is almost maintenance free we recommend that you check outAzek porch boards as a viable option.

Best,
Dave
