QUESTION about Screened In Porch Design: I was looking at some very pretty enclosed porches. We are building a new house and were having our deck covered already, but then we thought maybe we should screen it.

I want the entire porch to have iron balusters or something that looks like it. We were going to have stone piers as well.

Regarding the screened porch design, I can't figure out how or where the screen fits when you have balusters below the rail like some of your photos. Also wanted to know if there is a "clear" screen so it isn't dark.

ANSWER: Lora, you are going to love your screened porch - no doubt! Here are a few suggestions and ideas to answer your questions.

  • The screens can fit either on the outside of the balustrade (rails and balusters) or inside depending on your personal preferences. Either option works. I prefer to put them on the outside of the balustrade. You'll be able to see the balustrade from the outside and the balustrade will help protect the screening material from the inside as well as protecting the occupants.

  • Since you are going to have stone-faced columns to support the roof, I suggest you ask the builder to incorporate channels in the columns to accommodate screen panels. That way, it will be (1) easier to remove the panels for repairs/replacement if needed and (2) easier to blend the screen frames into the stone column design - making it look less like an add-on.

  • Opt for either aluminum or stainless steel for screening material. More expensive than typical vinyl but both are lighter in color. There are also other screening materials you may want to investigate as each has pros and cons.

  • Add wiring for an outdoor ceiling fan and additional lighting. It is always much easier and more cost effective to install wiring during construction. Wire several columns so you can install sconce lighting and add receptacles to several columns as well. See our porch electrical systems section for more ideas - before you build.
