Screened porch - looking for comfortable furniture ideas

by bstelljes
(wisconsin)

QUESTION: I have a screen porch that I LOVE!

I am looking for the "old fashioned" look in furniture, something you can sink into and sleep in without paying more than I did for my living room furniture. Something like sectionals, old rockers, etc. Any ideas other than the obvious ones I have researched on line?

Thank you!

ANSWER:Thanks so much for visiting our site. We love screened porches, too. And I know what you mean about wanting very comfortable furniture.

I have several ideas for you - even asked my Facebook friends to offer suggestions.

- Rhonda suggests: "Search on Craigslist for "shabby chic"."

- Consider some attractive slip covers that you could put over some super comfy furniture that might be worn a bit. Target has some slipcovers you may like - just search for "shabby chic slipcovers".

- Sheri offers: "Sounds like you'd enjoy cottage style...gently worn, distressed furniture with mismatched fabrics, heirlooms mixed with antique looks, bright floral patterns. Plants, birdhouses, rustic look, etc. You could just search for cottage style online and see what you get."

- Another idea is just to look at thrift shops, gently used stores or garage sales. If you're willing to look around a bit, I bet you could find some nice pieces to get that extra comfy furniture that you will love.

We'd enjoy seeing pictures of your screened porch especially once you get your furniture.

My best,
Mary

comfy couch
by: Bridget

For my screen porch I bought a 2nd hand floral sofa with big comfy cushions. It is indoor fabric but since it is under a roof it doesn't get much moisture, and we have had it out there for 4 years and it is still in great shape. It is my favorite place to lay down with a good book.

Goodwill has some nice finds too

My friend, Cindy, also offers this:

"I've also seen some nice things at Goodwill on occasion. There are also reuse centers, too."

More suggestions for comfortable furniture
by: Mary

Debby, from InteriorDecoratingToday.com, shared these suggestions and also provided the picture of her back porch with the white wicker rockers...

"You may want to look at antique wicker. Don't let the word antique scare you, it is much less expensive then the all-weather products out now and has loads of personality.

"You will probably want to use outdoor fabric on the cushions and then load up with throw pillows for a nice cushy feel. Consider humidity and moisture in your selections both in fabric and any wood you put on your porch.

"Have fun!"
