QUESTION: Do you need shades when you have a screened in porch to shade the sun?

ANSWER: Hello, Cathy. Under most circumstances, you would need shades, blinds or curtains to shade the sun.

When Dave and I had a screened porch, we had roll-up blinds. They definitely came in handy when the sun was shining in - especially in the summer heat. There are many attractive options you could use in a screened porch - from blinds to shades to curtains.

However with that being said, if you are in the process of building your screened porch or replacing your screens, there is a type of solar porch screening that you can use as your screening material.

Solar screen is a special screen mesh that is specially designed for sun control. It is an effective way to control the sun's heat and glare by stopping it before it enters your porch.

Solar porch screening is designed to block the heat gain generated by the sun. Although some solar screens may look dark from the outside, you can still see well from the inside looking out.

Think of it as similar to looking through sunglasses. It blocks the glare and sometimes the outward visibility is even better than without the solar screen.

A couple other things to consider. If your roof extends beyond your porch, it will also provide some additional shade. We have also seen some screen porches with shutters on the outside. However, those would probably prevent you from being able to see through them.
