Small Porch Expansion

by matthew
(charlotte nc)

QUESTION:I am looking at buying a small bungalow in a transitional neighborhood in Charlotte, NC. The house is full of charm and as plenty of space for me, my girlfriend and bulldog Jasper. There is just one small problem, the front porch is tiny. It is a concrete slab and the roof pitch does not look like it will allow an addition. But I need a big front porch in my life. Any suggestions on how to do this?

ANSWER: Thanks for writing. Great house and since you live in Charlotte you have the option for a shed-type roof.

You could then extend the shed roof (and the slab) the entire length of your home. I can't tell from the picture you sent but I believe you can leave the existing gable roof which will add charm and break up the design of the shed roof extension.

It may even be possible to extend the depth of the porch also to give you more sitting space. If you could send additional photos showing the side we could be more specific in our recommendations.

Hope this helps and feel free to send more photos.

Dave
