Step Expansion for Porch

QUESTION: My husband is using a walker and our front porch step is about a 1 inch shy of being wide enough to accommodate the walker without part of the walker teetering off the step. I was thinking of using decorative stone to add the needed width. Good idea or is there a better quick and inexpensive fix?

ANSWER: Becky, thanks for writing. It would be great if you could send us a picture of your steps. I'm a little hesitant to recommend adding decorative stone but that could be a viable option. The issue is that your risers may not meet building codes if they are less than 7 inches (generally what most areas require). In addition, they must be very secure so as not to cause an accident.

It would also be helpful if we knew what your steps are made from -concrete, wood, etc. Please let us know and we'll be glad to send more info.
