Front Porch Appeal: September on the Porch
September 03, 2025

Welcome to Front Porch Appeal!

Hello, porch friends.

September has arrived! While our grandkids headed back to school in August, here the summer sun and sticky humidity are still hanging around, though we did have a few days of lovely cooler temperatures.

But not to worry — our porches are ready for a little seasonal magic. Maybe yours is starting to show hints of autumn, with pumpkins peeking out among late-blooming flowers or cozy blankets waiting for cooler evenings.

Even if it’s still warm enough to sip iced tea, your porch can be a place of peace, wonder, and small moments of everyday joy as summer slowly tiptoes toward fall.

The Heartbeat of Home

We bet you feel the same as the two of us - a porch is more than just a place for pretty decorations. It's a place for real living, porch living.

It’s where we sip coffee at sunrise, wave to neighbors, or share stories with family as the day winds down.

Porches welcome us to slow down, to breathe, and to notice the little things—a golden sunset, a cool September breeze, the sound of birds settling in for the night.

This fall, may your porch be more than a backdrop. May it be a place of warmth, connection, and everyday joy.

Top Colors for Autumn Porches 2025

As the leaves turn and the air grows crisper, your porch can be the first sign of the cozy season.

This year’s autumn color trends are both warm and a touch unexpected — think moody plum, dusty blue, and soft sage paired with classic pumpkin orange and burgundy.

Whether you're looking for timeless charm or a modern twist, we share several styling tips your porch will thank you for.

Check out this our new article about the Top Colors for Autumn Porches.

🌿 A Little Reflection 🌿

We’ve been thinking about this: What small moment made you smile this week?

Maybe it was a neighbor’s wave, the sound of birds in the morning, or the smell of something baking. Or maybe something just went well for you.

Noticing those little joys make the days sweeter. Do you agree?

Fall Apple Decor for Your Porch

When the first hints of autumn begin show up as crisp tones in the air, don't you think it's a great time to add warmth and charm of the season to your porch?

This year, Dave and I are choosing apples as our autumn theme - something we haven't done before. I think our son Dan and his wife Rachel are going a similar route. It will be very fun to see how our respective porches turn out - one small porch and one larger.

We love the vibrant colors and classic appeal of autumn. While we don't have any apple trees, I do remember living in a house where apples were plentiful in the fall. We had several trees loaded with apples! I had one of those tools for easily peeling apples and we made bunches of apple sauce. So good with cinnamon.

Please enjoy our new post about decorating your porch with an apple theme - it's a fun idea we are excited about.

Simple September Porch Tip

As evenings grow cooler, try placing a few battery-powered candles (or solar lanterns) in lanterns, jars, or along your porch steps.

They give off a soft, welcoming glow—no fuss, no flame, and you can set them on a timer to come on each night.

It’s an easy way to stretch porch time into the dusk hours and add a bit of magic to your evenings.

🌿☀️ Porch Wisdom

The best part of this month is the in-between — when summer still lingers but autumn starts whispering at the edges.

Take time to enjoy both… iced tea on warm afternoons, a cozy throw on cooler evenings. May you enjoy your porch so much.

This photo takes us back to 2023, when our summer flowers were still blooming strong well into September and October. We tucked pumpkins and mums among them, creating a rich, colorful autumn tapestry.

Summer's Last Hurrah

Our friend Mary Beth shared these gorgeous photos of her window box planter, overflowing with hot pink and purple petunias. Isn’t it stunning?

One of the joys of late summer is seeing flowers at their fullest—abundant, vibrant, and putting on such a wonderful show.

We couldn’t stop at just one photo — Mary Beth was kind enough to share two!

Delightful to see these gorgeous petunias brightening her window with such abundance and color.

Introducing My New Molly Jo Daisy Book

I’m excited to share my new book, Molly Jo Daisy: Secrets of Cherry Forest.

It’s the story of curious and big-hearted ten-year-old Molly Jo Daisy who sets out on adventures with her younger brother, discovering hidden places, little surprises in nature, and the joy of family along the way.

Told through Molly Jo’s eyes, this story is filled with wonder, laughter, and everyday magic—the kind that reminds us how special simple moments can be.

If you'd like to see more about my book, here you go.

It's a lovely book for kids 8-12 or a really nice read-aloud book for parents and grandparents.
