Hello, porch friends.

The air is turning crisper, the leaves are beginning to show off, and the porch feels like the perfect place to pause and soak it all in. This month we’re celebrating cozy moments, small seasonal changes, a little apple-inspired charm—and the playful side of October with cheerful scarecrows and Halloween’s friendly glow.

Pour yourself a warm drink, pull up a chair, and enjoy these October porch notes.


🍂 A Season of Small Changes 🌻

October reminds us that big shifts often start quietly — a cooler breeze, a softer light, a single golden leaf.

Take a few minutes each day to notice the small changes around you and jot one thing you’re grateful for. Little reflections can grow into lasting calm.


🪑 Cozy Corners for Porch Living ☕

Cool evenings call for layered comfort.

Drape a chunky throw over your favorite chair, add a lantern or two, and keep a basket of blankets handy for friends who stop by. A mug of spiced cider or chai turns a porch into a mini retreat.


🍏 Apple-Inspired Autumn Décor 🍎

Our porch is all about autumn apples this year!

The dark red and white striped rocking chair cushions pair nicely with the blue-and-cream checked pillows, each hand-painted with a bright apple.

Tips: We wrapped the cushions with BH & G heavy-weight fabric and pinned it on the back—so simple! For the apples, I used red acrylic paint, starting small so I could adjust the edges easily.

Between the chairs, a plaid table cover holds a basket of hydrangeas and fall flowers, along with the wooden apple display Dave made. Our birch painting adds a touch of nature’s calm—wall art is one of our favorite projects.

It’s the perfect spot to sip cider, watch leaves fall, and enjoy the crisp, cozy days of fall.

This sweet wooden basket of apples, crafted by Dave, fits right in with our porch’s apple theme.


It may not be apple-themed, but this wall art really completes the space. I had fun painting it with acrylics.


Our son and daughter-in-love enjoy decorating their porch too, and this year they also went with an apple theme for their cozy space.

Their yellow mums are stunning with the apples!

No matter the size of your porch, a few thoughtful touches of color and comfort can make it feel extra inviting


Scarecrows in October 🌾🎩

There’s something wonderfully old-fashioned about a scarecrow standing watch in a yard or garden this time of year. Once built strictly to keep birds out of cornfields, today’s scarecrows feel more like autumn companions—grinning guardians dressed in plaid shirts and floppy hats, greeting neighbors with a touch of harvest charm.

They’re a little bit practical, a little bit playful, and just right for October’s mix of cozy evenings and Halloween fun.

Whether you craft one yourself with straw and spare clothes or pick up a ready-made friend at the market, a scarecrow brings personality to the porch or garden.
