Program Excerpts: Arts and Crafts Homes
The intrigue of Craftsman style homes
Craftsman Lifestyle
"We lived in Alexandria Virginia, right next door to a pretty famous Arts and Craft community called Del Rey and the thing I noticed was that they all had porches.
It was built in the '20's and 30's, which was the Arts and Craft era.
We loved going over there and the people were so friendly and family oriented and they are always sitting on there porches.
We had many conversations; just walking by and suddenly "oh, come on up here" and have tea with them on their porch."
Arts and Crafts Porch Features
"Some of the key features are exposed wood, exposed beams and rafters, long overhangs, wood and stone elements, broad porches, wrap around porches,
and windows often have the multi-pane light. Also the trim and moldings are more prominent and bold.
You can change the slope of the roof and there's even a craftsman airplane bungalow which looks like a cockpit."
Watercolor Renditions by Leisa
"My passion is architectural art. I use a technique called pen drawing, like ink drawing, and then I do watercolor painting on top of it which is perfect
to represent architectural subjects.
Especially ones like Craftsman which all have these lovely details, stonework, woodwork, features on their porch.
I never go past a detail of aesthetics and beauty that is there and include all the garden, landscaping.
I think the important thing about painting of homes, it isn't just about the home, it is about the entire environment that you create around your home."
