Front door wreaths are fabulous for capturing your eyes, drawing attention to your front door, and welcoming your friends and neighbors to your porch!

Mary and I like to dress up our front door (which is painted brick red) with colorful wreaths throughout the year to celebrate seasons and holidays.

The perfect wreath designs can make an unassuming porch stand out or take a beautifully decorated porch to another level.

From simple to sophisticated, wreaths can turn ordinary doors into extraordinary entrances. They are a friendly way to say "welcome"!

Using the striking colors of autumn, fall wreaths reflect the brilliance of maple leaves turning red, berries on bare branches, or many other outdoor combinations.

Using browns, golds, oranges and reds in your decorative front door wreaths, you will capture autumn's beauty in your wreath. Try dried or fresh autumn leaves, fresh mums, berries, yarrow and pine cones. Mary and I enjoy using maple and oak leaves. Other materials you can use are wheat, oat grass or sorghum millet. Intertwined, they make lovely combinations.

What about the wreath base? Grapevine and twig bases allow you to easily wind branches and silk leaves, hang ornaments, and attach pine cones. You can use a hot glue gun or t-pins to attach your materials to a foam base.

Do you need a wreath that transcends autumn and Halloween? Try a metallic gold and orange finished wreath decorated with miniature pumpkins to make your front door sparkly and festive.

Really want to prepare for Halloween? Then use black leaves, small pumpkins and black berries- it's gorgeous! Another idea is to use a bristling array of fall grasses.

We found attractive wreath designs at Plow & Hearth. Take a look; not everyone has the time or desire to make their own wreath. Plow & Hearth's ready-made wreaths make a beautiful gift for someone special. That someone might be you, of course.

Wreath hangers make it easy to install and replace your wreath throughout the year. You can find wreath hangers in brass, pewter, and wrought iron. These hangers fit over your door so you don't have to use nails or screws that will either make holes in your door or result in ugly scratches.

In addition, you can find standing wreath holders and table top wreath holders. Who knew there were so many ways to display your wreaths?

Standing wreath holders like the one at right from Plow and Hearth.com get rave reviews. A home decorator from Lomita California wrote that she couldn't find a stand at this height and that she purchased one for her daughter too!

Jensen from Connecticut wrote that the stand was very well made and sturdy and would not fall over. He used his stand in his foyer.

Don't forget that you can decorate the hanger or wreath holder as well.

Make a Front Door Wreath

Our thanks to Living With Lindsay for this great front door wreath project!

Lindsay created this beautiful fall wreath by placing wired elements into a grapevine wreath. She purchased two wreaths (a 14 inch and an 18 inch), wired them together, and then used floral/greenery stems and a large 'B' (first initial of her last name) from Hobby Lobby.

The 'B' is heavy pressed cardboard painted creamy white. If your front door wreaths are exposed to the elements, we recommend you use either a plastic or wooden letter instead.

Wreaths aren't just for the front door! Rose of Sharon displays one on a frame covered with wire - you can hang it anywhere on your porch for a pretty look.
