Adding Life to Your Backyard

With These Enjoyable Back Yard Options

Adding life to your backyard is one way to get more fun and enjoyment from your outdoor space.

Our neighbors, Tom and Joni, created a fun backyard oasis that we want to share with you.

We are appreciative to them for letting us show you their backyard makeover ideas.

Tom and Joni's Back Yard Creations

Tom and Joni's backyard makeover

Tom and Joni have a beautiful screened porch and they also love to spend time in their back yard too. So they recently added a deck that comes off their screened porch.

And, wow, it's a happy, peaceful place for relaxing and entertaining. We're so happy to get to show you what they did.

A DIY firepit and several comfortable adirondack chairs make for a nice conversation setting

Here, off their new back deck, you can see their cherry red Adirondack chairs and DIY fire pit. Such an enjoyable spot for relaxing, especially in the cooler months when the fire pit is lit and the marshmallows are roasting.

Another perspective of their relaxing firepit area
Corrugated roofing metal and galvanized buckets interplay with each other to personalize their deck

As awesomely creative people, they used corrugated roofing metal, a large metal initial and galvanized buckets overflowing with greenery to create a unique and cohesive area just their own. Tom is great with construction and Joni is awesome with design and arranging.

Together they make their home and yard beautiful.

They used their salvaged porch steps to create a DJ box for outdoor parties

On the opposite side of the charming corrugated roofing with the big metal "N", you can see steps. These steps used to be attached to the screened porch, but when the deck was built, they were no longer needed. So now they are a landing place for planters or possibly a DJ for parties in the future.

Groupings of plants in galvanized buckets in a corner of the deck

In the corner of the deck near the fire pit is another grouping of galvanized buckets and pots with greenery like holly and boxwood. Isn't the angel so sweet there?

Salvaged window frames and a porch swing turned into a swing bench

The salvaged window frames and planter boxes lend an enchanting feel to the back of their screened porch. They made their Nashville sign and it gives a special flair to their backyard.

If you look to the left, notice that there's a porch swing seat that has been attached to a bench. What a neat way to re-use a porch swing seat.

Backyard table with a rectangular shaped umbrella seats a good sized group for a picnic

Isn't this a fantastic table for dining a la fresco?

They topped the table with this pretty black and white striped umbrella that creates plenty of shade for the area. Now they have a spacious place for comfortably dining outdoors.

Did you also notice the lanterns on the table and hanging throughout? Such nice touches.

And another view of their outdoor dining table. We are super appreciative of Tom and Joni for allowing us to share their backyard creations with you.

They have pretty lights strung over their deck and in the evening it's quite a magical place. We'd love to show you a picture with the lights on sometime too.

More Ways to Add Life to Your Backyard

Maya has turned her backyard into a fragrant, beautiful and green oasis

Our friend, Maya, is an avid gardener and lover of beautiful flowers. She shares her serene backyard oasis with us here. We love this sweet seating area she created with two retro chairs, a vintage table and an adorabe bird house.

She says you need a focal point and we're pretty sure she's quite talented with that. Do you see her dog Bella? Maybe that's really the way Maya is adding life to her backyard.

Hang birdhouses on your fence for interest and appeal

If you have a fenced backyard, consider this sweet idea: hang colorful bird houses on the fence. Doesn't it create charm? We sure think so. And it would be fun creating those bird houses, too.

Be sure to include some comfortable chairs for lounging in your backyard

Isn't this a most inviting spot to come and relax? Add a few chairs and some potted plants in a shady corner of your backyard.

Look at These Ideas for Shady Backyards

Have a shady place in your backyard? Create a shade garden.

If you cannot grow grass because your backyard is too shady - or if you'd just rather not have a lot of grass to mow, try paving your yard with stone and adding plenty of colorful pots with flowers.

Shady backyards offer beautiful shade garden opportunities

Dave and I love shade-loving, durable yet elegant hostas. Create winding walkways within your backyard and add a variety of shade-loving plants and trees.

We hope you see that adding life to your backyard opens it up to new opportunities for relaxing and enjoying time with your family and friends.

Please Don't Leave Before You See This

a collage of backyard gazebo ideas

A backyard gazebo can be a beautiful place for privacy and refuge, even if your home is blessed with a covered porch. A gazebo is a little "getaway" where you can take your glass of tea and a good book and head to the backyard for some leisurely quiet and calm.
