Athens, GAA University Town with Southern Front Porches![]() Pulling into Athens GA, Mary and I were instantly reminded that this is a true southern town. When driving through the University of Georgia's campus, you will find grand southern front porches, especially on the fraternity and sorority homes. Advertisements Advertisements Porches are spaces you naturally gravitate to and offer both hospitality and a respite from the hurried world. We think you will really enjoy our front porch ideas from Athens and a few other northern Georgia areas. ![]() University of Georgia Alpha Sigma Phi FraternityUniversity of Georgia Fraternity and Sorority Front PorchesOne thing is for sure, you can not miss seeing these porch columns! Massive and grand, they are patterned after ancient Greek columns and are historically appropriate. These photos depict the various Greek column styles: Ionic, Doric, and Corinthian. The shafts on Ionic columns are taller than on Doric ones which makes them appear thinner in diameter. A unique characteristic of Iconic columns is that they have a slight bulge (an entasis) which helps to make them look straight even at long distances. Ionic columns are more decorative than Doric columns. ![]() Example of Ionic Porch Columns![]() University of Georgia Ionic Columns On PorchCorinthian columns are the most decorative and therefore are usually used most often. The shafts also have an entasis (bulge) and the capitals (the top part) contain leaves, flowers, and scrolls.![]() Example of Corinthian Columns![]() Athens Ga Corinthian Columns![]() Corinthian Columns on Front PorchDoric columns are the most basic and plain in design. They work well on horizontal-style buildings, the best example being the Parthenon.![]() Doric ColumnsLearn more about your porch column options for your front porch design by visiting our porch column section.Neighborly Front Porch IdeasMary and I found some interesting porch decorating and furnishing ideas as we walked the neighborhoods of Athens GA. More often than not, it is the little things that catch our eye. This trip was no different and our goal is to inspire you to use these ideas on your porch. Better yet, hopefully these ideas will inspire you to create your own! ![]() ![]() Outdoor porch light ideas, like the one at right, are popular and not only look decorative in daylight, but also cast a nice soft light at night. ![]() ![]() We like the arches between the columns. Exterior house trim, especially on porches, adds plenty of curb appeal. Porch trim is easy to install and adds a new dimension to any porch. It need not be elaborate as the trim on Victorian-style porches. Often, sets of brackets and perhaps some running trim is all you need. See our extensive exterior house trim section to get more ideas for your porch. ![]()

![]() Recycling an old sewing machine platform into an outdoor table works on this front porch. You may have items in your attic or garage that would be perfect as is, or recycled in some way, to place on your porch. ![]() I haven't seen this very often but the vines growing across the top of the porch work well on this porch. I can only imagine how pretty it might look when it blooms. We do know that places like Athens GA have beautiful flowering foliage. ![]() The double columns along with the exposed rafters on this open porch are impressive. ![]() Not often do we see an inverted "L" shaped porch; we are more used to seeing a wrap-around porch. The tapered columns and cozy seating/dining area really caught our eye. Mary and I are really partial to red metal porch roofs. If you are like us and like metal roofs, too, be sure to see our metal porch roof section for more ideas. We enjoyed our visit to Athens GA and know you would like it, too. When visiting, be sure to walk the many quaint neighborhoods to see a variety of porch ideas. ![]() Where Shall We Go Next?![]() Porch beauties in San Francisco.
