Bumble Bee Porch Decorations

Bumble Bee Wreath, Pillow Toppers and Porch Sign

A cheerful idea for summer porch decorating is to go with a cute bumble bee theme. That's what Dave and I are doing for our front porch.

We made pillow toppers, a wreath, an adorable sign and our grandchildren helped to paint bumble bee garden decorations.

Bumble Bee Pillow Toppers

Materials You Will Need for the Bumble Bee Pillow Toppers

  • A square of fabric that is the approximate size of your pillow. You can finish the edges if you like. I decided instead of simply hemming the edges of ours, I would add a decorative border using my sewing machine. That is the white and black polka dot fabric you see.
  • A pencil for drawing the design on the pillow
  • A permanent marker for outlining the design and doing the details
  • Acrylic paints of your choice - I used bright yellow, black and white in those small craft bottles (about $1 each)
  • Paint brushes
  • Water for rinsing your brush
  • Paper towel for blotting your brush as needed
  • Protective paper or plastic to lay down to protect your work surface

Instructions for Painting the Bumble Bees

  • Put down some protective material on your work surface. You don't want paint or marker to come through to your table. I used some heavy packing paper for my project.
  • Lightly draw a bee pattern onto your fabric with pencil. I found that if you make a mistake, you can kind of erase the pencil marks.
  • It's easy to just search bumble bee pictures till you find one you like or you can mimic our very simple bees. You can put one, two or more bees on the same pillow depending on your preference.

I used a permanent marker and went over the pencil lines with it. (Alternatively, you could do this as the last step.)

Start by painting the yellow parts
I went over my pencil marks with permanent marker
Now it's time to paint the bee - much like coloring in a color book. I used inexpensive acrylic paints.

It helps to paint all of one color at a time so you don't have to keep rinsing your brush. I did yellow first, then white on the wings, then the black stripes on the bumble bee.

Then paint the white wings followed by the black stripes

Paint the yellow portions of the bumble bee and then the white wings - just like coloring in a coloring book.

Add details with the permanent marker for the eyes, mouth, antennae
Black stripes painted and face details put in
You can add some details with your permanent marker such as the eyes, mouth and antennae. You could also add words if you like. It's all good fun.

Quick Instructions for "Bee on Your Porch" Sign

Lightly sketch the words onto your painted board
Words lightly sketched into painted board
First we painted the sign a background color that goes with our porch using paint we already had on hand. Then using a pencil, I sketched the words onto the board.

Paint the letters white

Then I painted the letters with white paint. You may want to choose a different color.

Added some bumble bees to the sign
I added the bees
Then I simply penciled in some bees around the words and painted them in.

Added some flowers to the sign

I sketched in some flowers around the words and bees and then painted them.

Materials You Will Need

Simple materials
  • A grapevine wreath
  • Some wired yellow ribbon
  • A bee you paint onto wood
  • Some wire for hanging

How to Make the Bumble Bee Wreath

  • Loosely wrap ribbon around the grapevine wreath.
  • Secure at each end by tucking into the grapevine.
  • Put a small hole into the bee near the top and put some wire through the hole.
  • Then secure the bumble bee to the wreath.
  • We also put a small hole near the bottom of the bee and put wire through it to secure it to the bottom of the wreath too. Otherwise our bee would blow around in the wind.
Hope you enjoyed our bumble bee porch decorations.
