Powell Ohio is a small historic community about 20 miles from downtown Columbus Ohio.

Powell lies in the scenic Olentangy valley and has been named one of the best places to live in the United States by CNN/Money Magazine. We loved the porches of Powell - many of them being home to local businesses and shops.



One of our favorite porches in Powell is the home of The Market at Serendip - they just lined their porch with colorful seasonal pots the morning we visited. Just beautiful! At the time of this writing, their website is not available (marketatserendip.com/).

Of historical note, four of John Brown's children are buried in Richfield's Eastview Cemetery. John Brown was a noted abolitionist. His children, Austin, Charles, Peter and Sarah, all died in 1843 due to a smallpox epidemic.

If you are traveling through northern Ohio sometime, be sure to stop off in Richfield and enjoy some great porch views!

San Francisco attractions include many world renowned structures, the most famous being the Golden Gate Bridge. However, it also boasts some of the most beautiful porches like those on the "Painted Ladies".

San Francisco's Painted Ladies

San Francisco is home to many Victorian-style homes, all of which tend to have fabulous front porches. What caught our eye may be of interest to you too. We found many enclosed porches. Based on the ever changing weather conditions in San Francisco, porch enclosures protect both owners and visitors from rain and wind.

We did notice that many homes and porches were adorned with gold exterior house trim as seen in these photos. We hadn't noticed that on other Victorian-style homes in other parts of the country but it does add a sophisticated appeal.

Sausalito California

Sausalito California is a small hamlet just north of the Golden Gate Bridge. It is a vibrant community, rich in picturesque beauty, sailing ships, and wonderful front porches.

Be prepared to walk up and down hills as the town is set among the hills of California. Houses, situated beside and almost on top of each other, boast porches of all designs.

South Pasadena, California

South Pasadena, California

South Pasadena, California, is located near Los Angeles and is a quaint community with lots of history and beautiful front porches nestles on tree-lined streets.

We share photos of these lovely porches to give you some neat ideas for your porch. You will be surprised at some of the unique and wonderful ideas you'll find.

Mary and I thought this was an interesting roof design. We do not know if this was part of the original design or installed to support the porch roof due to other issues that may have occurred later.

Tarboro NC Porches

Tarboro is located in central North Carolina, a small quaint community with friendly folks, quiet streets, and fabulous front porches! We tried to capture the serenity of this neat southern town in our photos of their front porches.

Note the exterior house trim in the photo above and in the two photos below. Mary and I really enjoy seeing how porch trim can change the look of a front porch. It is easy to combine different trims to create your own unique look.






An easy decorating ideas is to use a charming assortment of potted plants and other items you may have on hand to create a focal point or just add lots of interest to your porch. Notice the cute bunny statues.




Mary and I really enjoyed Tarboro NC and their wonderful porches. Next time you are in the area be sure to drop by and pay them a visit. You too, can then enjoy this quaint community and do some porch sitting.

Tiffin Ohio - Our Home Town

We visited our home town of Tiffin Ohio to capture the place and porches we knew so well as kids.

It was fun seeing what had remained the same and what had changed over the years. Who says you can't go home again!

Tiffin Ohio is home to Heidelberg University, Tiffin University, and National Machinery (the factory my father worked in until he retired). My grandfather worked as a glass-blower at Tiffin Glass, a world renown glassware manufacturer. Although no longer in existence, their products have become sought-after antique pieces.

Mary and I grew up in Tiffin, were high school sweethearts, and have fond memories of times past.

Porches are still important, especially in small towns. They connect us with our neighbors and our past. I spent many hours on that front porch pictured on this page. It became my fort, the swing became my airplane, and it was always a great hiding place.

Drive down almost any street in Tiffin Ohio and you'll see porches. Not a bad way to spend a day! Who says you can't go home again.

Mary and I were fortunate to visit the Winston Salem and Clemmons area in search of front porch ideas. We were struck by the diversity of front porch designs that ranged from southern country to arts and crafts.

We found unique design ideas for roofs, railings, and landscaping and tried to capture them for you in our front porch pictures.

It's easy to find wonderful porch ideas in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. We found oodles of great porches just walking through quaint neighborhoods lined with towering trees and among friendly folks. It was fun seeing how they were furnished and decorated and all of them seemed to say - "come, sit a spell".
