Porch Decorating for Memorial Day

Memorial Day Tribute Project

While this day is often considered just an extra vacation day, the real meaning behind this federal holiday belongs to the thousands of men and women who have not only served in our U.S. military but also given their lives for our freedoms.

In honor of all those who have been lost, it is almost always fitting to pay respects for those who gave the ultimate sacrifice. Here's a decorative project you can add to your front porch for such an occasion.

How to Make Our Memorial Day Tribute Project

Our Memorial Day tribute project

For a Memorial Day decoration and tribute on our porch, Dave came up with this idea to paint wood blocks, write a sentiment on them and top with three American flags.

We really like the results and want to share our easy how-to instructions with you.

This project requires three blocks of wood or even just 1 larger piece of wood You will need 3 blocks of wood, your choice of size, depending upon how large your want your decoration to be.

Or alternatively, you would do this with one block of wood and divide it into 3 sections for the red-white-and-blue effect.

We used the same wood blocks for our spring decor We are recycling the wood blocks that we used on our spring porch in years past.

Our wood blocks are painted red, white and blue for our Memorial Day Tribute Project

We painted the three blocks red, white and blue using paints we already had on hand.

The blue was spray paint. The red and white were brushed on. You could even use those small bottles of craft paints.

Drilling holes for our flags onto our Memorial Day Tribute Project

Now for the flags: Dave drilled 3 holes into the top block. The hole in the middle is straight up and down. He drilled the holes on either side on an angle.

Our Memorial Day Tribute Project is completed except for the lettering on the wood blocks

Here you can see the project completed except for the lettering.

The words are outlined on our Memorial Day Tribute Project

I started out stenciling the letters onto the wood and then learned that it was just as easy to simply draw the letters onto the wood.

Painting the words onto our Memorial Day Tribute Project

I painted the letters white and on the last block I painted them blue.

Completed. Our Memorial Day tribute decoration. The words mean a lot.

Porch decorating for Memorial Day can mean just a touch of patriotism here and there.

The Real Meaning of Memorial Day

For many, Memorial Day weekend signifies the beginning of summer fun and is characterized by picnics and barbecues.

But this federal holiday is actually a solemn observance of the men and women in the military who gave their lives for our country. This day is not to be confused with Veteran's Day which is November 11th.

While Memorial Day commemorates the men and women who died while serving, Veteran's Day honors all U.S. military veterans. Memorial Day used to be celebrated on May 30th, but in more recent years it is celebrated on the last Monday of May.

Did you know that Memorial Day used to be called Decoration Day? Traditionally it is a day when the graves of military men and women are decorated with flowers or flags.

Dave and I like to visit one of the many Veteran cemeteries on Memorial Day to pay our respects to those who gave their lives for us. It's a solemn and humbling place to be - among the sea of flags placed there by volunteers amidst the countless rows of graves.

Front Door Decorations for Memorial Day

Dave and I don't do much porch decorating for Memorial Day, however we wanted our porch to be patriotic to commemorate this special day.

So for our front door decoration, we hung the rustic Americana flag that we made last year for our 4th of July decorations.

And we added small flags plus red, white and blue bandannas to the decorative holder next to our door.

Remembering Our POW / MIA's

This Memorial Day, we are honoring all those who did not return with a modified POW/MIA table display on our front porch.

The two of us hope you have a wonderful Memorial Day with family and friends and between the hotdogs and burgers, we encourage you to find a moment to reflect and give homage to those men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice.
