Wooden Rocking Chairs

For your front porch

Wooden rocking chairs are soothing and nurturing. Dave is an avid rocker and I cannot remember a time when we didn't have at least one rocking chair. I remember buying him a rocking chair at Woolworth Department Store the first Christmas we were married.

In fact, for his birthday,I bought him a new blue wooden rocker with the Air Force emblem and it's waiting inside until the weather cooperates.

Just as you would have a comfortable rocker in your living room or baby's nursery, your porch deserves a couple nice rockers, too. Add some rocking chair cushions for extra hiney-happiness and you just might close your eyes for a little nap.

Colorful Gatlinburg wooden rockers

Did you know that come in many types of woods? Like Brazilian cherry, red cedar, walnut, oaks, mahogany, maple, wicker, and teak. They range of styles is wide, too: Windsor, slat back, Adirondack, Dixie, Kennedy, and Sutton. Perhaps the most famous of all is the Boston rocker. The chair back and armrests were often done in gold paint and are sought after by collectors.

RockingChairs.com also has some rocking chair covers to keep your rocker looking nice. And cushions, too. Even a folding rocking chair.

If you enjoy a good rocking chair or love woodworking (like me), take a look at some really fantastic handmade rockers made by Bill Lindau. They are prized one-of-a kind handmade rockers.

A short history lesson about wood rockers

The wooden rocking chair is an American invention although no one knows exactly who invented it. Many believe it to be Benjamin Franklin; however, documentation suggests that furniture maker William Savery built it at least as early as 1774. Early wooden rockers were known as carpet cutters because of the damage done to carpets by repeated rocking in the same location.
