Americana Decorations for a Patriotic PorchFun Times with FriendsAmericana decorations have become very popular and are perfect for celebrating many national holidays. These special decorations remind us of family and home, and elicit feelings of patriotism and warmth. Dave and I, along with our friends Liz and Doug of HoosierHomemade.com, just spent some time together decorating our front porch in vintage American decor for the 4th of July. Our goal was to decorate with burlap and other simple materials to create several easy 4th of July craft projects to share with you. Porches and Friends![]() We can think of nothing better than friends on porches. Can you tell we were having a great time? Dave, Liz, Doug and I had a blast working together as a team to create what we believe is a beautifully decorated front porch. Enjoy the tour of our projects and some sneak peeks behind the scenes. Americana Decorations on the Front PorchMostly decorating with burlap this year, we made firecracker decorations, patriotic flag banners and table toppers. We also came up with some super cute pillow toppers for the 4th. You won't believe how easy they are. With sewing machines buzzing and table saw blades whirling, we set out to make several decorative projects which we photographed and detailed for you. You can have most of these made in little time with not much expense. And we like that! We'll also give you a little behind-the-scenes look at how we did it. Patriotic Flag Banners![]() It wouldn't be the 4th of July without Americana patriotic flag banners. Made from 4th of July themed burlap, these patriotic banners were easy to make and can be modified to meet your specific requirements. Aren't they just kind of cool? These banners can be used on almost any size porch column or hang them from your porch eaves. Either way, they will definitely add a spirit of patriotism to your home. Americana Decorations: Patriotic Flag![]() Although you might want to actually fly Old Glory, this neat wooden Americana flag is perfect to hang on your front door. We made this one from scrap lumber but you could also purchase inexpensive wooden slats to make yours if needed. We'll share a little trick to give it a true Americana color too. This vintage American decor piece could look great inside your home as well - like in your foyer. Homemade Firecracker Decorations![]() Homemade Firecracker Decorations on Our Front PorchDave and Doug really enjoyed making these homemade firecrackers. They used PVC pipe that Dave already had on hand along with pieces of burlap left over from our banner project.Add a plastic lid and a little rope and you've got lots of "BANG" for little cost. Dave will even show you the little stand he made from barn wood to secure them on the porch. 4th Of July Pillow Toppers![]() All of the pillow toppers that we share with you are easy to make, but these are simply a breeze. Just get a piece of patriotic fabric the size of your pillow front (add an inch to all 4 sides for a hem) and add a burlap star to the center of it. Doesn't get much simpler than this. And cute, too. Next to the songbird pillows that I painted, these are my favorite ones so far. Patriotic Bird Houses on a Picket Fence![]() Making these patriotic birdhouses would be a fun project for the entire family. It's a 4th of July craft idea that you can add to each year. Here again, we used scrap lumber along with paints we already had in my craft room. Although the birds won't be able to live in them, they will surely add a little 4th of July whimsy to your decorating theme. They can be attached to something like our decorative picket fence, to a stake as a stand-alone decorative piece. They could also be displayed on a table. Sidenote: Liz and I laughed so much about how long it took us to make those blue "rosettes" on the bunting on the picket fence. Not worth it. Just scrunch up a bunch of burlap and hang it up. We Weren't Kidding About Having FunHaving Doug and Liz work with us on decorating the porch was hilarious and invigorating. We had our share of laughs I will tell you.Watch Our Video!A fun video of our porch decorating project with Liz and Doug.
